PDF reweighting in the Hessian matrix approach
2014
We introduce the Hessian reweighting of parton distribution functions (PDFs). Similarly to the better-known Bayesian methods, its purpose is to address the compatibility of new data and the quantitative modifications they induce within an existing set of PDFs. By construction, the method discussed here applies to the PDF fits that carried out a Hessian error analysis using a non-zero tolerance $\Delta\chi^2$. The principle is validated by considering a simple, transparent example. We are also able to establish an agreement with the Bayesian technique provided that the tolerance criterion is appropriately accounted for and that a purely exponential Bayesian likelihood is assumed. As a practi…
NUMERICAL ALGORITHMS
2013
For many systems of differential equations modeling problems in science and engineering, there are natural splittings of the right hand side into two parts, one non-stiff or mildly stiff, and the other one stiff. For such systems implicit-explicit (IMEX) integration combines an explicit scheme for the non-stiff part with an implicit scheme for the stiff part. In a recent series of papers two of the authors (Sandu and Zhang) have developed IMEX GLMs, a family of implicit-explicit schemes based on general linear methods. It has been shown that, due to their high stage order, IMEX GLMs require no additional coupling order conditions, and are not marred by order reduction. This work develops a …
Korpusavusteinen virheanalyysi tarkkuuden kehityksestä EVK:n taitotasoilla A2–B2
2020
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan kielitaidon taitotasoittaista kehittymistä potentiaalisten esiintymien analyysin (Potential Occasion Analysis, Thewissen, 2015) avulla. Aineistona on Kansainvälinen oppijansuomen korpus(ICLFI). Analyysi osoittaa, että merkittävintä kehitys on tasojen B1 ja B2 välillä; tasojen A2 ja B1 välillä tark…
Functional A Posteriori Error Estimates for Time-Periodic Parabolic Optimal Control Problems
2015
This article is devoted to the a posteriori error analysis of multiharmonic finite element approximations to distributed optimal control problems with time-periodic state equations of parabolic type. We derive a posteriori estimates of the functional type, which are easily computable and provide guaranteed upper bounds for the state and co-state errors as well as for the cost functional. These theoretical results are confirmed by several numerical tests that show high efficiency of the a posteriori error bounds. peerReviewed
Data Treatment and Error Analysis in Kinetics
2000
Methods of data treatment in kinetics are reviewed from a practical viewpoint. The equations to describe the kinetics of chemical reactions and the methodology to obtain the models are presented. Moreover, the integration methods that are needed for the simulation of complex reactions are explained, from the simple first-order reaction to the complex general mechanism. However, it is essential to know the main sources of error in data treatment in order to reduce their effects on the results. Stress is put on the analysis of the errors due to the simplification of complex models. The different factors that influence the kinetics of the reaction are reviewed. How to take advantage of the kin…

Error analysis for a special X-spline
1979
Clenshaw and Negus [1] defined the cubic X-spline, and they applied it to an interpolation problem. In the present paper, for the same interpolation problem, an interpolating splinew is considered by combining two specialX-splines. The construction ofw is such that the computational labour for its determination, in the case of piecewise equally spaced knots, is less than that of the conventional cubic splines c . A complete error analysis ofw is done. One of the main results is that, in the case of piecewise equally spaced knots,w ands c have essentially the same error estimates.
A computational approximation for the solution of retarded functional differential equations and their applications to science and engineering
2021
<p style='text-indent:20px;'>Delay differential equations are of great importance in science, engineering, medicine and biological models. These type of models include time delay phenomena which is helpful for characterising the real-world applications in machine learning, mechanics, economics, electrodynamics and so on. Besides, special classes of functional differential equations have been investigated in many researches. In this study, a numerical investigation of retarded type of these models together with initial conditions are introduced. The technique is based on a polynomial approach along with collocation points which maintains an approximated solutions to the problem. Beside…
Potential Vorticity Dynamics of Forecast Errors: A Quantitative Case Study
2018
Abstract Synoptic-scale error growth near the tropopause is investigated from a process-based perspective. Following previous work, a potential vorticity (PV) error tendency equation is derived and partitioned into individual contributions to yield insight into the processes governing error growth near the tropopause. Importantly, we focus here on the further amplification of preexisting errors and not on the origin of errors. The individual contributions to error growth are quantified in a case study of a 6-day forecast. In this case, localized mesoscale error maxima have formed by forecast day 2. These maxima organize into a wavelike pattern and reach the Rossby wave scale around forecast…
Effects of high-energy electrons in advanced NAND flash memories
2016
We study the effects of high-energy electrons on advanced NAND Flash memories with multi-level and single-level cell architecture. We analyze the error rate in floating gate cells as a function of electron energy, evaluate the impact of total ionizing dose, and discuss the physical origin of the observed behavior.
